JAM GAME - THEME “Lost and Found”
4 person team - Designer
January - 2021
I worked with 3 teammates to develop this game over 48 hours. One of the ideas we wanted to focus on was a solid set of mechanics that we could build levels with once we’d implemented them. This allowed me to write a brief GDD for required mechanics, audio and art assets, then develop the levels with full agreement of the mechanics.
To the left is an example of Level 6 in the game. I created this in an online sprite editor. These mockups allowed me to explore the mechanics of the game, and develop the levels, while the programmer and artist worked on actually creating the game.
During this project, as a team, we developed an idea, I ensured it had sufficient depth for a jam game. Then I detailed exactly what the game would require for a minimum product, on a development and art/audio side, then began designing levels for this system. Several bumps were encountered during development, almost all stemmed from version control however, and the actual development went entirely smoothly, with my designs being outlined clearly, and implemented.
The GDD can be viewed in Google docs at the link below.
Response and Self-Assessment
I believe that I’ve improved my craft from the last puzzle game I made, “I’m Hooked” the mechanics in this game are clearly conveyed, using the familiarity of the Tetris pieces, and crossing a stream, to create a new challenge. These affordances allow me to convey a fairly clean idea, that could have been more complex had I not used such familiar approaches.
