FINAL YEAR PROJECT
SOLO PROJECT - MUSIC PROVIDED BY FRIEND
DECEMBER - 2019
Created for the open ended final year project in my CS Degree, I used this module to continue developing a game concept I’d been toying with in the time beforehand, the idea of a Rhythm Based shooter. In the game, the player controls a character in top down style, inspired by Hotline Miami. I received the second highest grade achievable for this project.
Damage done within a 0.2 second window either side of the beat deals 5x the damage to the enemies, allowing you to one shot any enemy. I also focused on the “juice” of the game, having enemies explode into small grey circles, and having the menu animate slightly, just to make the game feel more alive than it could have.
I wanted the beat to feel as natural as possible, so the background of the level pulses in time with the beat. Finally I wanted to take the extra time in the project to implement as many accessibility options as I could, from font size, color-blind modes, and a volume setting.
Response and Self-Assessment
Overall I’m proud of this game. The game was well received by my friends and the markers. The game works well, and displays information succinctly to the player, indicating where and when enemies will attack.
I was also pleased with how much of a sense of the world I could convey using only straight lines and simple shapes.
