Jam Game - Theme “Only One”
Solo Project - Royalty Free Music Provided
July- 2019
I wanted to try something off the wall, interpreting the theme in a unique way. This was my first solo game jam, and I was perhaps too ambitious. I was aiming to make give the player a sense of loneliness. Create a game with a series of puzzles in the vein of Portal, each puzzle should be easily and obviously solvable with two people, however the player was alone. This meant that they would have to find a different solution, while being aware of the more simple one involving a theoretical companion.
I used a hookshot mechanic, similar to the Zelda series, as I felt it hadn’t been sufficiently explored, and could provide some interesting interactions in a different genre.

Response and Self-Assessment
I think the idea in this game showed a great deal of potential, however I was too ambitious for a 48 hour game jam. I realised half-way into development, that my key mechanic meant that no puzzle would technically ever require two players, and could easily be bypassed with a box and patience. This is because unlike in Portal, my mechanics never manipulated the world, they simply moved the player around.
However, given this limitation, I believe I still made a fun game, and did the best I could. Feedback was fairly positive, with people taking issue with Unity’s physics system, and its difficulty of controlling a 3D game in the web window.
